Hair Loss in Men: Understanding the Norwood Scale
The Norwood Scale delineates the 7 stages of Androgenetic Alopecia in men, the most prevalent type characterized by progressive, permanent hair loss and a decrease in hair volume.
Various types of alopecia exist, with hereditary androgenetic alopecia being the most common, causing hair loss. Other types, often localized in specific areas, may result from skin problems or medical treatments like chemotherapy. Baldness can be caused by multiple factors, with heredity being the most significant factor, even in cases involving stress, tobacco use, or nutritional deficiencies.
More than 50% of men aged over 50 experience hair loss, and many find this change traumatic. FUE has developed permanent solutions that extend beyond medication to assist these men.
Hair Loss in Women: Understanding the Ludwig Scale
The Ludwig Scale outlines the 3 stages of Androgenetic Baldness in women, a type of hair loss typically not leading to complete baldness. It is often associated with hormonal imbalances, affecting 1 in 5 women over the age of 50. Unlike male pattern baldness, it does not typically result in total hair loss across the scalp, but rather in a general thinning of hair mass, known as diffuse alopecia, which can cause significant distress for affected women.
Among various types of alopecia, androgenetic alopecia is the most common and is often linked to stress, medical treatments, or vitamin deficiencies. “Traction” alopecia, on the other hand, is caused by repeated handling and the frequent use of braids or hair extensions. DHI offers a range of personalized solutions for women who feel that thinning hair and hair loss are compromising their femininity. This includes hair replacement methods such as the detailed FUE Method, which involves injecting hair into affected areas.
WHAT CAUSES HAIR LOSS?
Alopecia, the medical term for hair loss, is primarily caused by androgens, a hormone that induces hair follicles to miniaturize and eventually shed. This condition typically results in hair loss following a specific pattern; in men, it usually starts at the temples or crown, while in women, it often leads to thinning along the middle part of the scalp.
Androgenic hair loss will affect 66% of men, and up to 40% of women.
Other causes of alopecia include:
- Autoimmune causes (alopecia areata)
- Stress or inflammation (telogen effluvium)
- Chemotherapy (alopecia totalis)
- Hair conditions caused by malnutrition
